tdor reminder :)

Just wanted to remind everyone that Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is this Saturday, November 20th! TDOR is a memorial day for victims of transgender prejudice (physical and emotional). The day was originally set aside after the disturbing hate-murder of Rita Hester in 1998, but November 20th has since become a day of recognition for all transgender people.
You can check more info on the event at transgender.org!

Main stream culture often muddles terms like 'transgender' and 'transsexual'.
What the heck is the difference, anyways, you ask??
An easy way to differentiate:
'Transsexual' tends to be more of a medical phrase, defining an individual as biologically having male and female sexual organs.
'Transgender', on the other hand, is not as sterile-- it encompasses those who do not completely associate with their assigned gender (regardless of their sexual definition); those who do not believe in the total opposition of 'male' and 'female'.
The root word 'trans' actually means across, or beyond :) (yay learning!!)

*Side note: 'Transgender' does not imply a specific sexual orientation whatsoever (i.e. if a male dresses female, he must be a homosexual); in fact, such assumptions are what the transgender community strives to pull into question, continuing to push the social boundaries.

The future is transgender. :)
